چکیده

Starting from the Maxwell-Bloch equations for a 3D ring-cavity laser, we analyze stability of the nonlasing state and demonstrate that, at the instability threshold, the wave vectors of the critical perturbations belong to a paraboloid in the 3D space. Next, we derive a system of nonlinear evolution equations above the threshold. The nonlinearity in these equations is cubic. For certain sets of four spatial modes whose vectors belong to the critical paraboloid, the cubic nonlinearity gives rise to a resonant coupling between them. This is a nontrivial example of a nonlinear dissipative system in which the cubic terms are resonant. The equations for the four coupled amplitudes have two different solutions which are simultaneously stable: the single-mode one, and a solution in which all the amplitudes are equal, while a certain combination of the phases is π . The latter solution gives rise to a quasiperiodic pattern in the infinite 3D cavity. We also consider effects of the boundary conditions and demonstrate that, if the cavity’s cross section is a trapezium, it may support the quasiperiodic four-mode state, rather than suppressing it. Using the Lyapunov function, we find that, for the ring-laser configuration, the four-mode state is metastable. However, we demonstrate that, for a Fabry-Perot cavity, where diffusion washes out the standing-wave grating, this state is absolutely stable. We also consider a number of more complicated patterns. We demonstrate that adding a pair of resonant vectors, or any number of nonresonant ones, always produces an unstable solution. A set containing several resonant quartets without resonant coupling between them may be stable, but it is less energetically favorable than a single quartet. PACS numbers: 47.54.+r; 42.60.Da

Frequency behavior of coherent random lasing in diffusive resonant media

We investigate diffusive propagation of light and consequent random lasing in an amplifying medium comprising resonant spherical scatterers. A Monte-Carlo calculation based on photon propagation via three-dimensional random walks is employed to obtain the dwell-times of light in the system. We compare the inter-scatterer and intra-scatterer dwell-times for representative resonant and non-resona...

Theory of two-dimensional microcavity lasers

Various kinds of devices, such as lasers and musical instruments, utilize stationary-wave oscillations in resonant cavities. In order to maintain stationary oscillation in these devices, nonlinearity is essential in the mechanism for balancing the pumping of the external energy and the decay of the wave of the quasistable state in the resonant cavity. Besides, the interaction between nonlineari...

Numerical Calculation of Resonant Frequencies and Modes of a Three-Atom Photonic Molecule and a Photonic Crystal in an External Cavity

In the present paper, resonant frequencies and modes of a three-atom photonic molecule and a photonic crystal placed within a cavity are numerically calculated. First, governing formulation in transverse electric field mode (TE) is obtained using Maxwell equations. Then, an algorithm based on a finite difference scheme and matrix algebra is presented. The algorithm is then implemented in a comp...

Fresnel filtering in lasing emission from scarred modes of wave-chaotic optical resonators.

We study lasing emission from asymmetric resonant cavity GaN microlasers. By comparing far-field intensity patterns with images of the microlaser we find that the lasing modes are concentrated on three-bounce unstable periodic ray orbits; i.e., the modes are scarred. The high-intensity emission directions of these scarred modes are completely different from those predicted by applying Snell's l...

Selective spatial confinement of the electric field intensity is theoretically obtained for the light propagation along hybrid structures conformed by periodic and Fibonacci quasiperiodic dielectric multilayers. Sandwich-like configurations featuring periodic-quasiperiodic-periodic as well as quasiperiodic-periodic-quasiperiodic designs exhibit spatial localization of a large percent of the opt...
